‘Farmers of both States must speak’

Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan on Wednesday said there was no need to fear that he was acting in the interests of Karnataka and not Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery water dispute.

Mr. Haasan met Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumarasamy on Tuesday and was severely criticised by a few political leaders for ‘initiating a dialogue’ on an issue which had been settled in the Supreme Court.

‘No interference’

“If the farmers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu speak together, there will be no need for politicians to interfere,” said Mr. Haasan. Anyone with good intentions would go and speak to anyone, he added. He said that he was just “one among the 7.5 crore people (of Tamil Nadu)”.

On Mr. Rajinikanth’s Kaala not being allowed to be screened in Karnataka, he said, “Just like how farmers should speak to one another, the film industry on both sides should speak.”
