MUMBAI: Heavy rains struck Mumbai this morning and are set to continue for a few das. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast "heavy to very heavy" rains in the city on June 9 and in Maharashtra in general June 7-11. The rains have already caused waterlogging in many parts of Mumbai, especially in low lying areas. Possibility of flooding is also high. Here's a list of dos and don'ts to follow during this time:

* It is obviously always better to stay indoors as far as possible during heavy rain. Do not go out, do not - especially - allow children, the disabled and the aged outdoors.

* If you live near the water, it is better to go away temporarily and stay with family or friends who live up-water.

* Avoid all flooded areas. Here's a primer from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).
on how to handle high-speed water flow in case you're stuck.

* Drink boiled and/or chlorinated water, tweeted the NDMA.

* Be very careful about not eating food that has been exposed to rain water or leaky roofs.

* Be extremely careful with hygiene. Avoid areas that have open drains, gutters as they are chockfull of disease. If you come into contact with dirty water, clean up immediately.

* Stay clear of electric poles that have fallen or exposed power lines.

* Get rid of faulty electrical equipment.

* Avoid using electrical appliances when in wet conditions like under a leaky roof or wet ground.

* Don't just keep everything charged, keep even battery backups charged. Make sure you have extra batteries for your torch. Get extra torches while you're at it. Charge your back- up batteries and power banks too.

* Similarly, stock up on food, medicines and all essentials, as you shouldn't go out and because shops and services may be shut for more than a day.

* It doesn't matter if you have a top-of-the-line SUV or a trusty two-wheeler that has never broken down. Absolutely avoid driving anywhere.
