A section of the film fraternity in the state has admitted to being hugely upset by the superstar's remarks on Cauvery water row. The gangster film which has been set against the backdrop of Dharavi (in Mumbai) brings together Pa.Ranjith and Thalaivar again after Kabali which had hit the screens in 2016. Nana as a politician who is clear about his mission is clearly at loggerheads with Rajini. Rajinikanth seemed bowled over by the reception. "This is my first visit to northern West Bengal. I am sure, I will fall in love with the hills," he said before leaving for Kurseong where he would stay for 37 days to shoot an as yet unnamed movie directed by popular Chennai based director Karthik Subbaraj. Sporting a white linen kurta, the actor, who enjoys a demigod status in large parts of south India, had a tough time boarding the steel grey Fortuna car a few metres away, amid the thunderous cries and frantic bids to capture his movements on mobile camera.
Rajinikanth, who recently joined politics in Tamil Nadu, had said that the Supreme Court's order on the Cauvery water-sharing dispute must be adhered by and Karnataka should release Tamil Nadu’s share of water. Ahead of its release this week, whether the movie will be screened here or not is still unknown as threats by pro-Kannada groups continue against the movie's release.
Huma Qureshi, perhaps best known for her role in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs oof Wasseypur, joins Rajinikanth and Nana Patekar in Kaala, possibly playing the superstar's love interest.

On Wednesday, actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth appealed to Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to provide security at theatres that wished to screen the film. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film also stars Eswari Rao, Samuthirakani, Sampath Raj, Sayaji Shinde, Anjali Patil, Manikandan, Dileepan, Pankaj Tripathi, Ravi Kale, Ramesh Thilak, Arul Doss, Aravind Akash, Sakshi Agarwal, Arundhati, Suganya and Nithish.

Kaala tells the story of a man who runs away from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu and goes on to become a powerful don in the slums of Dharavi. The makers, and Rajinikanth himself has reiterated time and again that Kaala is a commercial entertainer. ‘First day, first show’ defines superstar Rajinikanth’s film releases. While opening day tickets are impossible to score, procuring tickets even for the opening week is a mean feat. No wonder tickets still available for Kaala have shocked many as this is unheard of for a Rajini film in the last two decades. Kaala is Rajinikanth's first film since he made his political debut. Film critic Sreedhar Pillai said: There has been a drop in the ticket sales and it is nowhere close to Kabali or the previous Rajnikanth movies.
