Man killed by a bus in apparent driver-training exercise gone wrong

A man has been killed in the car park of Fairfield Showground in an apparent bus driver training exercise gone wrong.

Multiple police and crash investigators have cordoned off a large section of the Fairfield Showground car park, where a state transit bus struck and killed the 45-year-old man on Thursday morning.

The bus mounted a kerb and crashed through a fence bordering the showground oval just before 10am.

A witness to the accident said it appeared there were two groups of drivers training in the car park when the accident took place.

“They were training drivers here, there were about ten in each group and two buses,” Ted Smith, a truck serviceman said.

“I didn’t see it actually happen, I just heard the noise ... the crash.

“It wouldn’t have been five minutes and the police were here, seven car loads of them, two ambulances and they took a bloke away.”

“One of the guys was screaming, I think it might have been his mate who got hurt.”

Emergency services, including four paramedic units, responded to reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a bus in a car park on Smithfield Road just before 10am.

He suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene.

Paramedics treated another man at the scene for shock, before taking him to Liverpool Hospital.

Officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigations Unit will conduct a full investigation. The driver has been taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

Transport for NSW has been contacted for comment.

The fatal crash comes a day after a 72-year-old man was left in critical condition after he was hit by a bus in Botany while crossing the road.
