This first-of-its-kind agreement will comprise Tencent Travel and its partner, Trip Advisor China, running to endorse Vancouver as an international model for smart city tourism.
Tencent, as part of the three-year agreement, will offer Vancouver with cutting-edge mobile technology with interactive digital services to Chinese tourists and create a global benchmark, as Trip Advisor China will cross-promote Tencent Vancouver content to the Chinese.
“Our Tencent partnership will bring new tourism business to Vancouver from China,” said Stephen Pearce, vice president of marketing for Tourism Vancouver.
He added, “Tencent media platforms are used by 90 percent of China’s population and will give Vancouver a powerful boost in the travel market.”
In 2017, Tencent’s $530 billion market cap valuation pushed it past Facebook and a top spot amid world’s largest corporations. The tech company is accountable for some of the biggest news of China and social media apps like WeChat, which brags of a billion daily active users.
Jointly with Tencent, Tourism Vancouver will introduce the first official WeChat city app in Canada to offer real-time services to Chinese tourists.
The app will feature interactive itineraries, check-in features and location-based information for Chinese travelers, and will be specifically designed to attract visitors to various sightseeing, shopping and restaurants, which might not be known earlier with details like the opening times, addresses, contact information and dynamic maps.
