Tamil Nadu netted mineral revenue of Rs 1,106 crore in 2017-18 due to 'effective' measures taken by the government to increase it, the state assembly was informed today.
Announcing this, Law Minister C Ve Shanmugam, who also holds the Mines and Minerals portfolio, said by effective monitoring, 144 illicit mining cases were detected, 17,340 vehicles seized and Rs 49.62 crore collected towards penalty during 2017-18.
Also, 8,171 FIRs were lodged in connection with violations, he added.
Effective measures were taken to increase the mineral revenue for the State, the minister said adding for 2017-18 fiscal the "revenue realised is Rs 1,106 crore."
He also said in tune with an amendment to the Mines Act, district mineral foundation trust committees have been set up in all districts having mining leases.
As per a 2015 amendment to the Mines and Minerals Act, District Mineral Foundation Trust has to be established in all districts, he said.
"Accordingly, the managing committee and governing committee of DMF Trust under the chairmanship of the district collector with committee members have also been established in all districts of Tamil Nadu having mining leases," Shanmugam said.
The objective of the district mineral foundation is to develop areas under mining activity, he said and added that funds under the trust is for tasks like education, health, and women development of the respective regions.
A micro-level landslide hazard zonation project in Nilgiris and Kodaikanal is proposed to be taken up in collaboration with the Geological Survey of India, he said adding the initiative will guide authorities for taking measures to safeguard life and property.
