A Deltona man jailed on shoplifting accusations was also charged with kidnapping and battery following allegations he abducted his former girlfriend and terrorized her during a drive across two counties last week.
Luis Cosme, 36, was booked Wednesday morning at the Volusia County Branch Jail and was released 12 hours later after posting $36,000 bail, records show.
Volusia County sheriff's deputies said Cosme came into the accuser's home the morning of May 31, grabbed her, walked her outside and forced her into his vehicle. The pair drove to a bank where Cosme attempted to withdraw $1,800 from the accuser's mother's account, according to an arrest report.
The accuser and her mother owed Cosme about $27,000, but the report didn't disclose why they were indebted to him. Cosme and the accuser have a child in common, deputies said.
The withdrawal was denied due to insufficient funds and that "enraged" Cosme, who punched the accuser in the face and chest while the two were inside the car, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Cosme drove to a gas station in Longwood to get gas, at which time the accuser went inside the store, deputies said. She told the gas station clerk she was in fear for her life and she was told by the clerk to hide in the bathroom while she called law enforcement, the report stated.
Longwood police arrived and arrested Cosme on suspicion of stealing phone chargers from the gas station, authorities said.
A message left with Cosme on Thursday was not returned.
Jail and court records show Cosme was arrested earlier this year on child abuse and various drug charges. He is still awaiting trial on those charges.
