The Brexit secretary had convinced Theresa May to set a specific time limit on the Irish backstop plan, they said.

This would protect the UK from following EU rules and regulations forever for the sake of avoiding a hard border with Northern Ireland - in what they viewed as a clear win for Mr Davis.
