UP: Jal Nigam may collect samples from cancer village

The health department may write to Jal Nigam, Bareilly, to send a team to collect water samples from Bhooripur, a Bareilly village that has witnessed around 30 deaths from cancer in 10 years, an official said.

The health department’s move come after Hindustan Times carried a detailed report on the plight of the villagers in Bhooripur on World Environment Day. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Bareilly, Vineet Shukla said he will write to the Jal Nigam to send a team to the village to collect water samples from there.

The CMO said they had carried out a similar exercise in recent past in a village in Meerganj that witnessed a similar problem concerning water pollution. Shukla said the health department team would also visit the village and set up a camp to find out the actual reason for the spread of the disease.
