A city student has brought laurels to the State, bagging the second rank in the International English Olympiad (IEO).
Saraswathy Ashok, a Class 8 student of Arya Central School, here, came second in the IEO, part of the SOF Olympiad.
Over 45,000 schools from 1,400 cities across 30 countries participated in the six SOF Olympiad exams during 2017-18.
From the city, as many as 25,578 students appeared for the examinations.
Saraswathy was among the students felicitated at a function in New Delhi last week. The top three SOF international rank holders from Classes 1 to 12 for the six Olympiad exams were presented with awards. A total of 180 awards were given away.
Saraswathy won a silver medal, merit certificate, and a cash prize of ₹25000.
Twenty-five Principals and 50 teachers from 30 countries whose students put up exceptional performances were felicitated with cash awards, mementos, and citations.
Minister of State for Law and Justice P.P. Choudhary was the chief guest.
Mr. Chaudhary told students to celebrate examinations like they did festivals. Examinations were not a test of their personality, but a test of their preparations, he said.
Imagination, a defining characteristic of human beings, was critical to developing broader thinking, he said.
Mahabir Singh, founder and director of SOF, said 55,000 students from 5,850 schools had been given awards for achieving top ranks at the State-levels. Over 8 lakh students had also been awarded ‘Medals of Excellence’ for achieving top ranks in their respective schools.
The SOF International English Olympiad (IEO) is organised in partnership with the British Council.
