MYSURU: Travelling on Hunsur Road from Kalamandira to Paduvarahalli has become a nightmare for commuters.
The steep curve near Kalamandira and potholes near Kukkarahalli Lake on Mysuru-Hunsur Road have become death traps for riders.

On Monday evening, a college girl sustained serious injuries when she lost control over her scooter while negotiating a pothole in the middle of the road towards Kalamandira. Luckily, two policemen attached to VV Puram police station, who were riding on the same stretch, immediately rushed for her help, called the ambulance and sent her to KR Hospital. Some construction workers at the Maharani’s Commerce College, who witnessed the accident, told TOI that the girl did not notice the pothole which was right in the middle of the road.

“The girl was saved as she was wearing a helmet or else she would have suffered serious injuries. There are several potholes on the stretch and we notice regular accidents on the stretch,” a construction worker from Ballari district said. Police said the girl is recovering in a private hospital.

Commuters, however, complain that the potholes have appeared on the stretch due to poor quality of road work. After heavy rain inundated Paduvarahalli area during last year’s monsoon, the civic agency closed the road for more than two months to construct a stormwater drain across the Hunsur Road by laying magic boxes.

Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) had laid the asphalt recently after the drain work was completed. “But the poor quality of asphalt gave way potholes which is causing accidents,” said Paduvarahalli resident Basavaraj who had also registered a complaint with MCC.

When TOI contacted MCC commissioner K H Jagadeesh, he said that he will immediately take steps to fill the potholes on the stretch.
