It was revealed by the annual white paper on tourism that almost 29 million people visited Japan in 2017.
It marked a record high for the fifth straight year with a total spent a total of 40 billion dollars. However, the spending per person fell down to 1,400 dollars this was down by more than 180 dollars from the peak period in 2015.
Consumption by foreign visitors in Japan account for 0.6 percent of the gross domestic product as per the report and the spending-to-GDP ratio was 12 percent in Thailand. It was about 5 percent in Spain and 2.6 percent in Australia.
The government is expected to encourage the tourism operators by creating new services focusing on experiences like the nighttime entertainment. The government is positive that the trend would reverse.
By 2040 the government expects to reverse the trend and it will almost double the total spending.
