Sharapova was due to meet the 23-time Grand Slam champion on Monday in the fourth round, but her opponent pulled out with an arm injury.
Williams had complained about the problem during her third-round win over German 11th seed Julia Georges on Saturday.
Sharapova, however, had little to shout out about yesterday as she was unceremoniously dumped out at Roland Garros in the quarter-finals with a straight sets defeat to Garbine Muguruza, who wrapped up the victory inside 70 minutes.
With Williams pulling out last minute against the Russian in the last-16, it sparked debate on social media about her decision and whether or not she was afraid to face Sharapova, whom she has a long-running feud with.

I mean, I think she made everyone wait a little bit
And when asked for her thoughts on the former world No 1’s withdrawal, Sharapova said: “I hadn't had a withdrawal in - I don't know how long. It's probably been, like - I don’t know.
“Maybe someone knows. Maybe like six years or something.
“So I didn't really know what to do. Is there a Lucky Loser coming?

“No, we're deep in the tournament. I was, like, Okay, next round.
“That's just kind of how you handle it.
“But, yeah, I mean, I think she made everyone wait a little bit.”
