The ban was announced by mayor Gautam Shah during a press conference to mark the World Environment Day on Tuesday. “The decision has been taken keeping in mind the ill-effects of plastic on health and environment,” said Shah. He also announced that the corporation would set up oxygen parks by planting dense canopy trees on 20 open plots in coming days.

Noting that the plastic water bottles disposed of by people in the open are an environmental hazard, Shah said, “We will install reverse vending machines in the city under the Swachh Bharat mission as well as the Beat Plastic Pollution theme for this Environment Day. This machine will crush the plastic bottles and the waste thus generated will be used to make items like pillows, covers, T-shirts, etc.” He added that they plan to offer coupons for every bottle that is dropped in the machine. Also on the cards is beautification of BRTS stations by growing vertical gardens along their walls. Citizens will be invited to adopt BRTS stations to grow the gardens.

Implementation is what matters

Calling it a gimmick, Dinesh Sharma, leader of opposition in AMC, said that the corporation had earlier too announced such bans, but they never reached the implementation stage. “The office-bearers of AMC get concerned about the environment only on the World Environment Day.” “AMC has banned Rs 2 water pouches, but they are of great help to the common people.

The corporation should make an alternate arrangement for availability of cheap drinking water,” said Dhanraj Patel, a professional.

Environmentalist Mahesh Pandya said that the law on plastic ban law had been introduced in February 2011 by the Centre. So far it has not been implemented. We hope that will be done now. The biggest hurdle in success of cleanliness campaign is plastic.”

Get saplings planted at your home
On Tuesday, AMC also launched a ‘Plantation on demand’ app which will allow citizens to order saplings of their choice and get them planted at their homes. All they need to do is provide their residential address and the name of the plants they want on the app. Workers from the AMC’s Parks and Garden department will visit their homes and plant the saplings. The app will be active from June 25

Kankaria a no-plastic zone
