There are online shoppers — and then there are Amazon shoppers.
The latter are a dedicated group of consumers, and will buy more of nearly anything compared to regular shoppers on the web.
Amazon is the jumping off place for millions of online shoppers, according to an NPR/Marist poll of more than 1,050 adults released Wednesday. (Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.)
About 44% of shoppers begin their journey on Amazon versus 33% who do a Google search and 10% who use another app or website such as Walmart or
Amazon may have one weak point, however. Although 84% of Amazon customers shop for apparel online, only 20% say they usually buy these items on Amazon, while 76% of Amazon customers buy these items elsewhere, the survey found.
Others see big things for Amazon’s clothing sales. Financial services group Cowen & Co. projects that Amazon will sell $28 billion of clothing in 2018 and $62 billion by 2021. (Amazon’s total revenue for 2017 was $177.9 billion.)
The ability to predict how a pair of jeans or suits will fit could be a game-changer for the retail industry. Amazon recently invited volunteers to an office in New York to study body size and how it changes over the course of 20 weeks.

The retail giant has dominated almost all other aspects of online shopping, and changed the way consumers buy products on the web and in person.
Known as the “Amazon effect,” brick-and-mortar stores — especially department stores — are struggling to reinvent themselves and provide shoppers with a reason they need to walk into a store instead of order items online.
There are 100 million Amazon Prime users, who will now pay an annual fee of $119 for free two-day shipping and a whole list of other services, and they naturally shop on Amazon more than general online shoppers.
Here’s what else the poll found:
• 40% of Amazon shoppers buy vitamins or supplements on the site compared to 26% of online shoppers.
• More than one-third (37%) of Amazon Prime users purchase an item on the site at least once a month, and 29% do so at least once a week (versus 28% of general online shoppers who purchase an item on Amazon at least once a month, and 15% who do so at least once a week).
• 92% of online shoppers say they have bought an item from Amazon, and 64% said they were Amazon Prime users.
