Sports quota scam: Telangana sports authority officer arrested

HYDERABAD: Days after the irregularities into the issuing of certificates by Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) to ineligible persons came to light, Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths on Wednesday arrested SATS deputy director G Venkataramana for allegedly playing a key role in the whole scam. Earlier, using these certificates several persons obtained MBBS or BDS admissions during 2017-18 academic year.

It all started with ACB officials conducting raids on Wednesady in more than five different places in the city, which includes at the residence of Venkataramana and at the office of SATS, Basheerbagh. Officials said that it was on May 19 government of Telangana referred the complaints from one Bharathchandra Reddy and Varshitha Raj to ACB ordering a probe into the matter. Venkataramana is a member of SATS scrutiny committee for issuing a copy of allotment of priorities to the sports persons for the admission into MBBS/BDS course under sports quota.

"It was alleged that irregularities took place in the allotment of priorities by the SATS for the admission into MBBS/BDS course under sports quota for the academic year 2017-18. Accordingly, a regular enquiry was taken up ACB," ACB deputy director M Ramana kumar said in a press note.

On May 25, 2018 ACB officials received another complaint from Satyanarayana, father of Bharathchandra Reddy, where in he alleged that Venkataramana demanded and accepted bribe of Rs 1 lakh. A case was registered against him under Prevention of Corruption Act against Venkataramana. On Wednesday searches were conducted at the residence of Venkataramana and four other SATS officials-Deputy Director GA Shobha, Incharge A&SS K Manohar, Cycling Velodrome Administrator G Chandra Reddy, SATS Administrator Vimalakar Rao.

"Venkataramana is being arrested for demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 1 lakh Satyanarayana for providing a copy of priority list in the month of August, 2017. Required documentary and digital evidence is being collected from the office of SATS,’’ Ramana Kumar added.
