HYDERABAD: Allegedly upset over her performance in NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), an 18-year-old girl from Hyderabad committed suicide by jumping off the 10th floor of a commercial complex on Tuesday. Videos of Jasleen Kaur jumping from the building went viral within minutes, through which her family got to know of her death and approached the police.

Daughter of businessman Ranveer Singh, Jasleen had recently completed her second year intermediate in BiPC (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) from Sri Chaitanya Junior College in Narayanaguda. The medical aspirant went into a state of depression, according to her family, on Monday afternoon when the NEET results were announced.

Occupants of Mayur Kushal Complex in Abids, from where the girl jumped to death, are in a state of shock. “I heard a loud thud at around 10.20 am. I imagined that an air conditioner box fixed at any of the several floors must have fallen,” said Gopi, who works at a jewellery shop in the complex.

“When I rushed to check, I saw the girl lying on the ground. Many auto drivers said they shouted out to the girl not to jump. Some others were busy making a video of the incident on their mobiles,” added Gopi. Soon after, videos of last the few minutes in Jasleen’s life surfaced on TV channels and  internet.  Seeing the news and Jasleen’s image on TV, her mathematics teacher rushed to the spot.

“She was a good student,” said the teacher Ramakrishna Reddy. “She studied in the same class from Class I and consistently performed well in academics. Her CGPA in Class X was over 9,” he added. Jasleen’s family members said they were not even unaware of her exact score in NEET. Her father had been to Bengaluru on work and returned only on Monday night. One relative said the family wanted to find out her NEET score from her friends. But they knew she was depressed after results were announced.

Abids SI K Lakshmaiah said the teenager had left from home at around 8.30 am that morning. “She told her parents that she was going to the gym, which is located near her house in Barkathpura, Kacheguda. However, she came to Abids on her bike, parked it in Chirag Ali Lane, walked into the building from where she took the final plunge,” the official said. A case of suspicious death has been registered.
