Vadodara: When the parole furlough squad of Vadodara rural police knocked at the door of 29-year-old Varsha (name changed) in the Ghatlodia area in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning, she sensed that police had finally got to her doorstep to take her back to her parents at Hinglot village in Vadodara taluka.
Police arrested Varsha’s husband, Kamlesh Parmar (32), from Raipura Chowkdi in Ahmedabad, 11 years after the duo had eloped. Varsha was 17 when she eloped with Parmar, who was her neighbour, and the couple got married. Varsha’s father had registered a complaint of kidnapping and abducting a minor to compel her to marry at Vadodara taluka police station.

At first, police couldn’t find the duo and got an arrest warrant issued against Parmar under section 70 of the criminal procedure code.

The couple now have an eight-year-old daughter and an 18-month-old son. Police said Parmar told them that they settled in Ahmedabad for the last six years after staying on the run for a few years. A casual labourer when he lived at Hinglot, Parmar is now a marketing executive in Ahmedabad.

“The FIR was registered and the couple had not reached a settlement with the girl’s parents. As the court had also issued an arrest warrant, we had to arrest him as part of the procedure. We only recently received information about Parmar’s whereabouts,” said a police official.

According to police sources, Varsha refused to cooperate with them and even resisted undergoing a medical examination.

“She has continuously been saying that she does not want to go to her parents’ house and will only go wherever her husband is,” a police officer said.
