HYDERABAD: A newborn girl found abandoned in Erkula basthi in Nacharam police station limits with animal bite marks died in the state-run Niloufer Hospital on Tuesday. The authorities said the baby was hardly able to breathe when she was brought to the hospital. “The baby was in extremely critical condition. As she was gasping for breath, we put her on incubator and later resuscitated but could not revive her,” duty RMO Dr Jayanti said.

Asked about the bite marks, she said: “There are some marks on her body, but we cannot tell for sure if they were of a dog or rat.”

Child rights NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham claimed that Tuesday’s incident was eighth such instance of an abandoned baby succumbing to injuries. The incidents continue despite a central government provision for housing abandoned children under the ‘Ooyala’ (cradle scheme) and a beeline for adoptions by childless couples. Women and child welfare authorities were unavailable for comment.
