Assam Handloom and Minority Affairs minister Ranjeet Dutta has said 21 model residential schools will be set up for the welfare of minority community.

Participating in an AIR talk show, Mr. Dutta said these schools will be set up under Multi-Sectoral Development Project. with a cost of over 30 crore rupees each. The minister said the Assam government has started Muga Outreach Mission to increase the production of Muga and Eri.

He said Assam alone produced 80 percent of the country's total Muga and 64 percent of Eri silk. Mr. Durga further announced setting up of two model handloom villages at Majuli and Moran.

He said steps are being taken to promote Assam's traditional Gamosa and silk at the national and international level. He said yarn banks have been set up at district level and now onwards, mobile unit will sell yarn in villages at a subsidised rate to help weavers.
