Seven passengers were briefly trapped in an elevator about the ferry Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday.

According to a statement from SSA general manager Robert Davis, the incident occurred at about 2:15 p.m when the boat was docked in Woods Hole. The elevator stopped operating properly just before it reached the upper deck and the door would not open.

One of the passengers on the elevator called 911 and a friend who was elsewhere aboard the ferry. That person alerted the Steamship Authority crew, and the chief engineer was able to open the elevator door and get the passengers out safely befor the fire department responded.

A spokesman for the Steamship Authority said the passengers were trapped for about 10 minutes. The elevator has been taken out of service pending an evaluation by an elevator technician.
