Blatant use of power by the BJP-led regime at the Centre has put the institution of democracy in danger, said Amarjeet Kaur, national secretary of the CPI here on Wednesday.
There was an urgent need to protect democracy, nation, and the Constitution. The only way was to launch a powerful movement of the Left, democratic and secular forces to defeat the communal BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she said.
The Modi-led NDA regime has failed in all fronts and should be thrown out of power in the forthcoming elections, Ms. Kaur told reporters here.
Ms. Kaur, who is also the all-India general secretary of the AITUC, was here to attend a two-day State council meeting of the AITUC that began here on Wednesday.
The NDA Government was functioning out and out on a communal agenda. Discrimination against minorities, working class, women, and tribal people has shocked the political forces and countrymen to the core.
Even Hindus and intellectuals were not being spared. The Constitution was being flouted putting democracy in danger.
The people of the country have been put to economic hardships due to demonetisation and the other anti-people policies pursued by the NDA regime at the behest of corporate houses, and international funding agencies.
This had to be fought back at any cost, Ms. Kaur said adding that the CPI has launched a massive nation-wide campaign, ‘Save India; save Constitution,’ to create an awareness among society and mobilise support of all sections to counter the nefarious activities of the BJP and Sangh Parivar.
The campaign will culminate at New Delhi by middle of October, she said.
Ms. Kaur favoured one-to-one contest to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls. The Left and secular parties may have their own separate agenda in various States. But, there should be only one opponent to BJP.
Referring to the results of the recent Assembly elections in Karnataka, Ms. Kaur said that it was a positive outcome.
The Congress after suffering jolts in Manipur, and Goa where it could not form the governments despite emerging as the single largest party has learnt tough lesson.
“Karnataka outcome has taught a good lesson to the Opposition parties and also shown the right direction.”
Referring to the police action against the Sterlite protesters in Thoothukudi, Ms. Kaur said that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s statement of involvement of anti-social elements in the stir only proved that his government was run by the BJP-led Centre and corporate houses.
Referring to the recent Governors’ conference, Ms. Kaur said that her party has been of the view that the Governor’s post should be abolished. The Centre used the services of Governors to corner State Governments that did not cooperate with them, she said.
