BENGALURU: The release of Rajinikanth-starrer
Kaala on June 7 in Karnataka may face a major hurdle with chief minister H D
Kumaraswamy openly backing the protesters.
“Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and some
Kannada organisations have been opposing the release for a genuine cause. The filmmakers must oblige the opposing parties until the
Cauvery water-sharing dispute is completely settled,” Kumaraswamy told reporters on Tuesday.
The CM’s statement came just a day after he met Rajinikanth’s fellow actor-turned-politician
Kamal Haasan and sought his support on the amicable sharing of Cauvery water.
Asked about the Karnataka high court direction to release the movie and provide police protection, Kumaraswamy said: “We need to follow the HC order. That is a different issue. But as a Kannadiga, I am not favour of the movie being released. I request the producer and distributor not to take a risk in such a disturbed atmosphere. If they still want to go ahead, I warn them it won’t be financially viable. I am also a film distributor and producer and know what it takes to make a movie and release it.”
In his petition before HC, Kaala producer
K Dhanush, who is Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, has submitted that it is the fundamental right of the petitioners to exhibit the film. The Film Federation of India has also requested KFCC to expedite release of the movie in the state.
