154 students from Mumbai college dismayed after failing HSC exams

Mumbai: The future of over 150 students of Ismail Yusuf College in Jogeshwari (E) will hang in balance until June 12 as they have failed their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board examination. Students claimed their internal marks were not submitted by the college to the state board but the board revealed the college has submitted all the marks. The reason for the failure of such large number of students is unknown yet.

Over 154 Science students and some from Commerce and Arts streams found they had failed when the results of HSC examinations were announced on May 30. Students revealed they had received very low marks in Physics and Mathematics and protested outside the college campus along with their parents. They complained that the college had not submitted students’ internal marks as the exam was based on 70 (theory)-30 (practicals) marks pattern. Student Bhargavi Thakur said, “I secured just 20 marks out of 100 in Physics. How is that possible, as I had taken my practical exams and performed well in my theory paper. The college has not submitted our internal marks for we cannot score so low.”

However, Subhash Borse, secretary in-charge, state board, Mumbai (division), said, “We have inquired and found that the college had submitted the internal marks of all students. We have added students’ marks according to the submissions made by the college as internals are entirely managed by respective colleges. Also, we have checked and there is no error in paper correction from our end.”

The college claimed students would get a clearer picture once they receive their marksheets from the board on June 12. Swati Wavhal, Principal of Ismail Yusuf College, said, “We have appealed to the state board to provide the marksheets as soon as possible. There is no error from our end. Our college has students who have scored low marks in Class 10 board examinations and we have a low pass percentage, so the failure count is not a new phenomenon.”

Amidst the confusion, students are suffering as they do not know why they have performed so dismally. A student said, “154 (students failing) is a huge number and definitely there is some error somewhere. We are in a fix as we cannot even apply for admissions to degree college without a pass result. Even if we get our marksheets on June 12, we will still be marked as failed. It is just that we will get a break-up of our marks for theory and practicals.”
