‘In-laws, husband wanted ₹3 lakh’

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Monday after his wife allegedly committed suicide in north-west Delhi on Sunday alleging dowry demands by him and her in-laws, the police said on Tuesday.

Pawan was arrested a day after 22-year-old Pinky committed suicide at their Jahangirpuri residence, the police said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) A.K. Lall said she was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her room on the third floor on Sunday. The police control room received a call regarding the suicide around 5 p.m.

“She was alone on the third floor at the time of the incident. Her husband and in-laws were on the ground floor. A relative spotted her hanging and informed everyone,” Mr. Lall said.

Pinky was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

‘Insufficient dowry’

Her mother, the complainant in the case, told police that Pinky got married to Pawan in December 2017 and was regularly harassed for “insufficient dowry”.

“They wanted ₹3 lakh to buy another house,” her said.

Based on her mother’s complaint and preliminary probe, the police registered a case under Sections 304B (where the death of a woman is caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under normal circumstances within seven years of her marriage) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty).
