Ambedkar's story among new Ignou courses on anvil

BHUBANESWAR: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) will introduce three certificate courses and a diploma course from July. These courses are on event management, first-aid, tribal studies and life and thought of Dr. B R Ambedkar and the last date for application is June 30.
According to Ignou's regional centre, the minimum duration for the diploma in event management is one year and maximum time limit allowed to complete it is four years. A student who has passed Plus II examination can join it by paying an one-time fee of Rs 8,000.

This course aims to equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills in one of the most exciting and rapidly growing event management industry. "This programme will provide comprehensive knowledge to those who want to pursue event management as a profession," said Santosh Kumar Panigrahy, assistant regional director of Ignou.

Other three courses are certificate courses of three-month duration. For the first-aid course, a 10th pass student can enroll by paying Rs 3,500. "They will be taught ways to deal with emergencies. It enables the learners to recognize the symptoms or conditions that require first aid," said Panigrahy.

Tribal studies course will be of help to people working in the social and welfare service sectors, while the course on Dr B R Ambedkar aims to teach the philosophy of the great leader. Minimum eligibility for the course is Plus II and the course fee is Rs 1,000.

Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and transgender students need not pay fee for these courses. "Besides, our handicapped students get scholarship from the central government. We have 200 physically-challenged students in our region," said Panigrahy.
