One accused arrested; efforts on to nab two others

A 25-year-old man was allegedly shot dead on Monday night after he intervened in a fight between two groups in north-east Delhi’s Seelampur, the police said on Tuesday. One accused has been arrested, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Atul Kumar Thakur said the victim has been identified as Salman, an AC repairman.

Two calls

The police control room received two calls on Monday night. The first call at 11.15 p.m. informed the police about firing in a street in the area, while the second call, which was made minutes later, informed them that a man had been shot dead.

“When the police reached the spot, they were told that the victim had been taken to a hospital. Salman was declared brought dead at the hospital,” Mr. Thakur said.

Man injured

Investigation revealed that two groups, led by Shahzad and Nazim, got into an argument, following which Shahzad started firing. Salman, who was standing nearby and knew both the groups, tried to stop the fight. However, he was shot dead. Nazim’s brother Mukim also sustained a bullet injury in the stomach.

Mr. Thakur said Shahzad and four of his accomplices, including Moinuddin and Aqil, were confronting Nazim after someone told Shahzad that Nazim was sharing his personal information with his rivals. Mukim came to help his brother.

“Shahzad and his accomplices slapped Nazim, after which he retaliated. This was followed by Shahzad firing at them. Mukim got shot in the stomach and Salman fatally,” Mr. Thakur said.

The police said Moinuddin has been arrested in connection with the incident and teams are on the lookout for Shahzad and Aqil. “A case on charges of murder, attempt to murder and under the Arms Act has been registered. Efforts are on to identify the other accused, and nab Shahzad and Aqil,” Mr. Thakur said.
