Speaking to the media before his departure, Abe, who is trying to assume a greater role in the rapprochement process with North Korea, launched by South Korean Moon Jae-in, said he maintains close communication with Trump and that their positions on the denuclearisation of were the same.

The Japanese will try and adopt a joint declaration at the summit calling for complete denuclearisation of North Korea, official sources had stressed on Tuesday.

Abe also wants Trump to include in the summit's agenda the issue of Japanese citizens kidnapped by the regime decades ago.

Abe is also expected to discuss with Trump the high tariffs on and aluminium imports, an issue that has led to fears of a possible trade war between the US and its allies, and is expected to dominate the agenda of the summit.
