PUNE: Many dams in
Bhima basin have registered
pre-monsoon showers in their catchments in the last few days including four dams that supply
drinking water to the city.
There are 25 major dams located in Bhima basin. The Ghod was only dam that did not register any rainfall since June 1. The maximum rainfall of 90 mm was recorded in catchments of
Kalmodi dam, says the latest data released by the state
irrigation department.
Officials in the state irrigation department said that pre-monsoon showers have hardly increased water levels in dams. The catchments will have to receive continuous spells of rains to increase the water storage, they said.
Officials said that most dams recorded heavy spells in last three days. Among four dams around the city, Khadakwasla recorded maximum rainfall of 42 mm followed by Varasgaon 35 mm, Panshet 33 mm and Temghar 9 mm till June 6. Pavana dam which supplies water to
Pimpri Chinchwad recorded 24 mm rainfall.
Officials said that during last monsoon, water stock in most dams in Bhima basin had reached maximum capacities because of good rainfall. Water released from dams had increased the water storage in Ujani dam to its full capacity. Officials said that they were expecting decent rains in the coming four months.
