Updated at 1.37pm: Adds council statement
The pedestal of a bust dedicated to Maltese poet and writer Ġorġ Zammit was vandalised between Monday and Tuesday night.
Councillor Jerome Caruana Cilia said on his Facebook page the Qormi council condemned the incident and filed a formal report about it. It has also requested an investigation.
The bust is at Ġnien Ġorġ Zammit in Mdina Road.
In a statement later, the council said paint was also thrown at a bus stop in the area. It appealed to the authorities to fine people committing such cowardly acts heavily.
It also appealed to anyone who may have information about the act to pass this on to the police.
