GHAZIABAD: A fake call center that allegedly duped job-seekers of money by promising them employment in the Life Insurance Corporation of India was busted on Wednesday. Seven persons were arrested and the
fake call centre was busted after any anonymous caller provided a tip-off to SP (city) Akash Tomar.
The call center was operating out of a building in
Sahibabad. Police said the callers used mobile phones and a laptop to send fake appointment letters to prospective job-seekers. They would ask the applicants to deposit money as processing fees in an account in the Punjab National Bank.
“We will ask the bank to freeze the account. Investigations are underway to ascertain who was operating the account and if there are more such accounts operated by the gang in other banks of the city. An FIR has been registered in the matter. The caller informed me that he had paid Rs 7,000 to the call center for getting a job in the
LIC. At present, we are trying to ascertain the total number of persons duped by this gang by verifying the call details of the phones that have been seized,” Tomar said.
Police have seized 12 mobile phones and a laptop from the gang. The accused have been identified by police as Anuj, Javed Ali, Ankur and Surendra from Ghaziabad and Mohit, Shivam and Ayush from Delhi.
Police suspect the racket could have a larger network across Delhi-NCR. The modus operandi, through which the gang members procured contact numbers of jobless youths, is being investigated.
