At 36.6C, coolest day since May 8; relief may continue

NEW DELHI: It was a relatively ‘cool’ Wednesday as maximum temperature fell four degrees below normal to 36.6 degrees Celsius. It was the coolest day since May 8 when the maximum was 34.7 degrees. The AQI on Wednesday was in the moderate category.
With the northwest region receiving pre-monsoon rain along with thundery development, Delhi is likely to see cloudy sky over the next two days with a chance of pre-monsoon rain on June 10. The regional Met office forecast shows ‘thundery development’ on Thursday and Friday with the maximum expected to hover between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius, officials said.

Palam was the warmest on Wednesday at 38.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Ayanagar which recorded a 37.4 degrees. The normal maximum temperature for this time is generally around 40 degrees Celsius. “There is a chance of light pre-monsoon shower on Sunday with Thursday seeing similar cloudy conditions. There will be thundery development with the maximum temperature likely to be around 38 degrees Celsius,” a Met official said.

Delhi’s air quality also improved on Wednesday with windy conditions helping in the dispersal of pollutants. The AQI improved from 171 on Tuesday to 136 on Wednesday with a reading between 101 and 200 classified as “moderate” according to CPCB’s index. The humidity, meanwhile, was on the higher side, hovering between 62% and 66%.

The maximum and minimum temperatures on Thursday is expected to be around 38 and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.
