Demand for MGU Finance and Taxation course goes up

GST implementation makes the course most sought after undergraduate programme

The increase in demand for trained tax professionals following the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) seems to have made the B.Com. Model I course in Finance and Taxation the most sought after undergraduate programme offered by Mahatma Gandhi University in the academic year 2018-19.

Of the 18.29 lakh option registrations made under the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP), 2.49 lakh options were made for the B.Com Model I Finance and Taxation course. The surge in demand for the programme was evident right after the GST was rolled out in last July. Of the 3.42 lakh option registrations in 2017-18, 27,011 options were registered for the Finance and Taxation course in 2017-18 academic year.

The B.A. Economics Model I, which was placed third last year in the list of most sought after programmes, went up the ladder and came second this time. About 1.44 lakh option registrations were made for the course as per the data emerging out of the online registration for CAP this time.

The BA English Language and Literature Model I programme, which had came second last year, slipped to third position even though the course maintained its popularity among the aspirants. About 1.37 lakh options were registered for the programme in the new academic year.

Among science courses, B.Sc. Physics Model I went ahead of B.Sc. Chemistry Model I course to emerge as the most sought after undergraduate programme in science. The varsity received about 1.26 lakh option registrations for the course. For Chemistry, the corresponding figure was 1.18 lakh. About one lakh option registrations were received for the B.Sc. Zoology Model I course while the figure for B.Sc. Botany Model I course was 87, 807. The option count for B.Sc. Mathematics Model I was 93,140.

There was good demand for other B.Com. courses like Model I in Computer Applications (aided) and Model I Finance and Taxation (self-financing stream). The option registrations for the two courses were 48, 375 and 43, 925 respectively. For B.Com. Model II Computer Applications, the option count was 46,187 while the corresponding figure for B.Com. Model I Computer Applications was 40,718.

The option count for B.A. History Model I course was 47, 744 while the registration count for B.A. Malayalam Language and Literature Model I was 40,772.
