BENGALURU: After five years, the Karnataka government employees got 30% pay hike recently and now the news: this is a mixed bag for them.

The government is contemplating to limit the working days in a week to five, with increasing the working hours and cut down some “Jayanti” (Birth anniversary)-related holidays.

While the corporates are following the five-day week system, the govt is working on the same to bring creativity and increase the performance of its workers.

CM HD Kumaraswamy has asked the chief secretary and department of personnel and administrative reforms to look into the pros and cons of this scheme and give a report in this regard.

Two days of weekends comes with some conditions. “Jayanti” holidays will be cancelled, if any community wants to celebrate, they can avail it as restricted holiday. Daily working hours will be increased by 1 to 1.5 hours. The CM is exploring the legal options along with the report, ministry sources said.

Currently, second Saturday is holiday while the fourth Saturday leave has been proposed in the 6th Pay commission headed by retired IAS officer M.R.Srinivasmurthy. Taking another, two Saturdays as holidays will not affect much. To compensate this, “Jayanti” holidays will be cancelled and working hours will be increased. Holiday of two days in a week will save electricity, fuel and other daily expenses too. This may help in austerity drive, said the sources.
