When The The announced their first concerts for 16 years last September, the shows sold out in minutes. However, a shadow was cast over the comeback when singer Matt Johnson announced on Saturday that his beloved father, Eddie, had died unexpectedly.

Johnson’s grief was palpable. His family is famously close, and he’s already had to deal with the death of two brothers. He said in a statement at the weekend that he was unable to cancel this week’s concerts due to the “massive financial implications”. But he added that recently his father made “my brother Gerald and I promise that if anything were to happen to him we would both carry on… and make him proud.”
