18.25 lakh acres of ayacut to be created

The Kaleswaram lift irrigation project got the prestigious clearance by technical advisory committee of Central Water Commission at New Delhi on Wednesday after a Powerpoint presentation by Engineer-in-Chief C. Muralidhar and chief engineer of the project Hariram.

The meeting at the CWC headquarters was presided by Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources U.P. Singh, CWC chairman Masood Hussain, Joint Secretaries of Ministries of Finance and Agriculture, NITI Aayog Advisor and Directors and Chief Engineers of all wings of CWC.

With this, the Telangana government has got ten CWC clearances and is awaiting the final one from the Ministry on investments.

The project envisaged creation of 18.25 lakh acres of ayacut and stabilisation of ayacut of another 18.82 lakh acres.

For Hyderabad

It was proposed to lift 195 tmcft from Medigadda barrage but the total availability of water was 240 tmcft, including 20 tmcft from Yellampalli barrage. The CWC had already approved usage of 237 tmcft, including 169 tmcft for irrigation, 30 tmcft for drinking water needs of Hyderabad and 10 tmcft for drinking water in villages along the canal network.
