CHENNAI: Though the State government has received appreciation for its decision to ban manufacturing, sales, storage and use of single-use plastics across State effective from January 1, 2019, environmentalists are sceptical saying this is not the first time such a decision has been taken and faltered.
“Imposing ban is one thing and implementing it is another. Where is the infrastructure to execute the ban. How will they monitor? Nothing so far has inspired confidence. It’s only a tokenism on World Environment Day,” said environmentalist Shwetha Narayanan.
A Narayanan, director, Change India, said former CM J Jayalalithaa in 2002 has made similar announcement and withdrew it within six months. “The government should show commitment in implementing the ban,” he said.
