BENGALURU:Soundarya Jayachandran maybe an English singer-songwriter by profession but continues to stick to her roots as an Indian origin.Trained in classical music for eight years, Soundarya admits that her classical roots helped her be the musician she is today. The upcoming singer who has had several stints with AR Rahman, Vishal Dadlani, and others, is now, working on her new single for the first time. Not revealing much on her work, the 22-year-old performer says, “This time, the music is more upbeat and more pop compared to my previous indie-music. I am currently working with a few LA artists so it’s a bit commercial.” The musician further goes on to say, “The music this time is not a projection of my emotions but more like a medicine for them. There is enough sadness in this world so this time my goal is to just let people dance,” she explains.
The name will be revealed at its launch in the next few months. “I’m taking the artists’ advice on when to release it but the work is originally mine,” she adds. The artist has been performing within five shows a month across the country and was also one of the performers along with playback singer Shaan, at the 10th anniversary of the Kempegowda International airport which was held on May 26.
When asked about what she continues to find challenging as an artist, she explains that as an upcoming singer, getting people to attend shows is still a huge obstacle that needs to be surpassed. “People expect you to have a huge Bollywood achievement which is hard and there is no support system there,” says the Mount Carmel College graduate, adding that she does not have a specific target audience and that music is for all to listen and enjoy. Her work ‘Unapologetic’ was released in 2016 and premiered on Vh1’s Hit factory. She was also featured as their artiste of the month.
In 2017, she decided to create, co-produce and host her very own web series called “BSIDES”, a series dedicated exclusively to musicians and getting to know them beyond their professional stand points as the people that they truly were. She also recorded a song called, I Don’t Need Nobody in collaboration with Qyuki; an initiative by Shekar Kapoor and AR Rahman, which was acclaimed and promoted by Rahman himself.
On her upcoming performance in the city, the latter will be covering retro music with some acoustics as she considers the genre “refreshing”. The Trinity College London grad will be performing at Foxtrot, Marathahalli on June 9 at 8pm.
