Rhossili bay beachgoers WARNED to be alert for ADDERS

Beachgoers are being warned to beware of the adders after recent bites by the venomous snakes.

Three people including the young girl were treated for snake bites on the stunning beach at Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula in Wales - voted one of the best beaches in Europe.

All three are understood to have been treated in hospital for their injuries before being released.

Coastguards are now warning visitors to the beach to be weary of the snakes who live in the sand dunes.

Mark Button, of Rhossili Coastguard, said: "Helpful advice is to stick to footpaths, wear long trousers, socks and shoes and make a bit of noise while walking i.e. stamping feet help as snakes pick up on vibration and this can help to frighten them off.

"Anyone who is bitten by a snake should call 999 immediately.

“Adders are the only venomous snakes found in the UK in the wild and need to be treated by anti-venom.

Around 100 people are bitten by adders each year with the majority happening between June and August.

Although potentially deadly, there have only been 14 deaths from adder bites reported in the UK since records began in 1876 and no one has died from an adder bite since 1975.
