A federal grand jury indicted a letter carrier May 31 on two counts of murdering officers of the federal government, alleging he killed his immediate supervisor and the Dublin postmaster.
DeShaune K. Stewart, 24, of the southeast side of Columbus, could face the death penalty if convicted, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Ben Glassman of the Southern District of Ohio.
Witnesses say Stewart was naked when he entered the Dublin post office on Emerald Parkway just before 4:30 a.m. Dec. 23, 2017, and shot and killed his supervisor, Lance Herrera-Dempsey, 52, who was in charge of customer service, according to police reports.
Stewart left the post office and was not found by officers until nearly three hours later, still nude and with a handgun, outside the northwest Columbus apartment of Dublin postmaster Ginger Ballard, 53.
Nearby was the body of Ballard, 53, who authorities say had been thrown to the ground; her skull had been crushed.
Stewart had been facing discipline at work for unspecified infractions, police reports said. He told officers his managers had been harassing him.
