DAYTONA BEACH — It was just a matter of good timing.

Chase Elliott, who drives the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, was in town Wednesday morning on Daytona International Speedway’s behalf.

Godwin cornered the young driver for a quick one-on-one interview and we share some of that interview in this edition of Daytona Motor Mouths.

Elliott was asked about winning at Daytona, where his father Bill Elliott scored four NASCAR Cup Series victories, and if Team Chevy was getting any closer to competing with Ford and Toyota.

You can get those answers on the podcast.

The question on everyone’s mind right now is what the heck happened in the Detroit Grand Prix, where the pace car crashed during warmup laps on Sunday.

Ken reads (and alters) a statement from Chevrolet on the matter and assures everyone it was funny because “there were no serious injuries.”

In addition to Elliott, the boys have audio clips from Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney and a confusing back and forth between a reporter (first name Kyle) who was asking Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson questions after the Pocono race.

Your favorite racing podcasters then debate a bit about Busch’s combined national series wins vs. Richard Petty’s 200 Cup Series victories.

Ken fields a #HeyWillie question from Twitter about whether NASCAR should allow more gears for road-course Cup events. Ken finds a way to talk himself to a conclusion.

All that and more on this week’s Daytona Motor Mouths.

Each week, join The Daytona Beach News-Journal’s Godwin Kelly and Ken Willis, two of the preeminent motorsports writers in America, as they hit all the hot topics in NASCAR. And maybe a few other things.
