CM gives lengthy reply, but doesn’t address the demand

Since the Central government has notified the constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami should take steps to ensure the release of Cauvery water from the Mettur dam on the customary date of June 12, the DMK said in the Assembly on Monday.

During Zero Hour, Ministers from the Cauvery delta districts — Food Minister R. Kamaraj, Textiles Minister O.S. Manian and Agriculture Minister R. Doraikkannu — lauded the efforts made by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Mr. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam towards getting the Centre to notify the CWMA in the gazette.

Making an intervention, DMK Deputy Floor Leader Duraimurugan sought to recall the efforts of made by DMK president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to resolve the Cauvery issue and said the latter had contributed immensely to the cause.

“Now that the CWMA has been notified, we urge the Chief Minister to make efforts to release water [from the Mettur dam] on the customary date of June 12 to facilitate kuruvai cultivation,” Mr. Duraimurugan said.

Although Mr. Palaniswami gave a lengthy reply on the efforts of Jayalalithaa on the Cauvery issue, he did not respond to the DMK’s plea on water release.
