Bali Nine member Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen dies in Indonesian hospital

A member of the Bali Nine convicted drug smugglers, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, has died in Indonesia.

Nguyen was given a life sentence after being arrested for trying to smuggle heroin through Bali in 2005.

In Indonesia, a life sentence means never-to-be-released.

Ade Kusmanto, a spokesman for Indonesia's Directorate General of Corrections, confirmed that Nguyen had died on Saturday, May 19 at 7.10am at Siloam hospital in Jakarta from stomach cancer.

"His body has been handed over to his adoptive mother Jolita Zonneveld,” Ade said, adding that his body would be brought to Australia.

Nguyen was moved to Jakarta last year on the request of his family to get access to better treatment for his cancer.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed on Tuesday night that they were providing support to the family of an Australian man who died in Indonesia from a "terminal illness".

Nguyen is the third member of the Bali Nine to die after Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed by firing squad in 2015.
