Guns and ammunition have been stolen in an early morning break-in at a King Country sports store.

At least two offenders were involved in the burglary of Sports World in Maniapoto St in Otorohanga early Tuesday.

They used what appeared to be a car jack to smash through the front entrance of the shop in the town's main street at 4.30am, Waikato police Senior Sergeant Will Loughrin said.

"They managed to steal a number of firearms and ammunition," Loughrin said early Tuesday.

"We also believe they have taken a number of clothing items."

It was unclear how many firearms were stolen, he said.

The pair fled the store to a black vehicle which was stolen from Te Awamutu overnight.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on a nearby street in Otorohanga where police recovered one of the stolen firearms. Several others were still outstanding.

Police officers were making inquiries at the Te Awamutu property where the car was taken.

"The shop will undergo an examination by our forensic specialists and local officers will be scouring the area for any CCTV."

The owner of the store was aware of the burglary and was at the scene.

Loughrin appealed for anyone who may have seen anything or have information to contact Otorohanga police on 07 873 7399.

Information can also be left anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
