BENGALURU:
Jasleen Royal has been the voice of super hits such as Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (Baar Baar Dekho), Love You Zindagi (Dear Zindagi), Din Shagna Da (Phillauri) and Teri Dastaan (Hichki). And now, she’s ready to take centre stage at a show this weekend organised by Sukoon, a platform that brings handpicked music theatre and art events to Bengaluru.Excerpts of the interview:
1. Whats in store at the Bengaluru show?
It’s our first gig in Bangalore! I have visited the city before because my extended family and friends stay there. We are looking forward to playing a lot of my newer compositions and giving an interesting spin to some of the songs.
2.What are some of your best and not-so-good performances?
That is tricky! Some performances might start off as not so great because every audience is different but the idea is to turn it into a great one and sense what’s required. That’s what experience teaches you.
3.As an independent musician, what are the challenges you face?
Every project comes with its own set of challenges. Independent music gives you full freedom to do what you want to do. And with freedom comes responsibility. It’s just you doing everything and backing your vision. If you live what you do then it’s all good.
4.How competitive is the Bollywood music industry? Do you see yourself working more with regional films?
I don’t really see it as competitive. I have found a lot of people to be extremely encouraging and supportive. Vishal Dadlani always tweets when he likes a song of mine and Swanand Kirkire collaborated with me in the initial days. Harshdeep Kaur is a close friend. I have already done some work in regional films. I have sung two Gujarati and one Bengali song.
5.Singing or songwriting?
I like the balance between the both. I love music. I love to sing and feature other people on my compositions. Just can’t choose one over the other.
6.Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I just know about now. Like what I am doing next. Things will fall in place.
peace, calm and is soothing to the soul.
