Education Secretary Betsy DeVos told a Senate committee Tuesday that the Federal Commission on School Safety, which she chairs, won’t weigh gun-control measures.
The commission was formed by President Donald Trump following the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., in which a gunman killed 17 students and staff. Trump initially voiced support for some firearms-related measures, including raising the gun-purchasing age to 21, before assigning the issue to the commission for further study.
DeVos made the comment Tuesday in response to a question from Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, telling senators that curbing gun violence “is not part of the commission’s charge per se.”
“So we’ll look at gun violence in schools, but not look at guns? An interesting concept,” responded Leahy, a Democrat.
In the commission’s first two meetings, both held in May, the school-safety panel focused on behavioral models intended to improve school climate and identify students who may pose threats.
