Kiwanis Club celebrates Bob Noss Teacher mini-grant award

The Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia celebrated its 25th annual Bob Noss Teacher Mini-Grant Award Luncheon at the Smyrna Yacht Club on April 25. 50 teachers, selected from more than 80 applicants from the ten participating schools in Southeast Volusia County, were awarded a total of $15,000 to utilize for their classroom projects. The Bob Noss Teacher Mini-Grant Program was designed to provide additional funding assistance to teachers wishing to implement add-on activities, learning aids, technology, or other support for their students. Superintendent's Outstanding Achievement award winners announced

The School District of Volusia County and Futures Foundation for Volusia County Schools named Debra Keese, registrar at Cypress Creek Elementary School, and Sherry Shepherd, school bus operator in the DeLand area, as the 2018 Superintendent’s Outstanding Achievement Award winners. Father's Day donations requested

Mary Barrs and God's Little Angels charity will be handing out gift packages to more than 50 lonely fathers this Father's Day. The program, titled "You are Never Alone" is requesting donations of socks, underwear, towels, wash cloths, pajamas, lotions and soaps. Monetary donations are also welcome. Checks can be made out to God's Little Angels and sent to SunTrust Bank at 200 S. Palmetto Ave., Daytona Beach.

More rain, more mosquitoes

Saturated soil from continuous rainfall plus subtropical storm Alberto brought a deluge of biting mosquitoes to Volusia County. Coastal residents are experiencing a notable increase in aggressive salt marsh mosquitoes. Volusia County Mosquito Control is responding as quickly as possible by air and ground to resolve the situation. Residents affected by biting mosquitoes can submit an online service request form at volusia.org/mosquito. Residents of incorporated Deltona, DeBary, Orange City, Lake Helen, DeLand and Pierson should call their city to submit a request.

School Board workshops

The School Board of Volusia County will host workshops 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 7, in the board room at the DeLand Administrative Complex, 200 N. Clara Avenue. The purpose of the workshop is to discuss safe school officers, board travel authorization, tentative department and capital budgets and a vehicle replacement plan, as well as a warehouse overview. Following the workshop, a second workshop will be held jointly with Daytona State College at 2 p.m. The workshops are open to the public; however, in accordance with policy, there will not be public participation. DeLand library book sale

The Friends of the DeLand Area Public Library is hosting a book sale from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, and from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9. Kickball for a Cause festival

Kickball for a Cause Festival, hosted by the Youth Athletic Charity, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Coraci Sports Complex, 5200 Coraci Blvd., Port Orange.
