GHAZIABAD: The Ghaziabad Development Authority has set December 2018 deadline to decongest two busy intersections of the city—Raj Nagar Extension crossing and Vasundhara traffic signal crossing—by completing flyovers proposed at the junctions, construction work on which commenced recently. The GDA has started laying foundations for pillars of the flyovers at the two junctions after service roads, meant to divert traffic during the construction phase, were completed.
The projects have been undertaken by the GDA at a total cost of Rs 106.35 crore, which has been made available from the Infrastructure Development Fund of the city.

At the Raj Nagar Extension crossing, where a split flyover is designed to accommodate the alignment of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor, the public works department has completed work on two horse-shoe shaped U-turns on the central verge that now allow one-way movement of vehicles by doing away with the traffic signal. By doing away with the signal, which used to result in jams from tailback of vehicles, construction work has been eased.

“Shifting of electric lines to carry out construction work at Raj Nagar Extension is complete. The service road on the left, as one drives down Meerut, is complete. On the right side, the service road will be further widened after filling an unused drain. A traffic diversion plan has already been put in place with the construction of U-turns on the central verge,” GDA chief engineer V N Singh told TOI.

At present, vehicles travelling from Raj Nagar Extension towards ALT crossing have to take a left turn in the direction of Meerut, access the reverse carriageway through the U-turn to merge with vehicles travelling from the direction of Meerut and then take a left turn towards their destination. Similarly, vehicles travelling towards Raj Nagar Extension from ALT Crossing have to take the other U-turn on the central verge.

Piling work for pillars has also commenced at the Vasundhara traffic signal crossing. “Portions of the service road before the crossing as one travels towards UP Gate from Mohan Nagar are complete. Work is underway to shift electric cables from the portion of the service road after the traffic signal. This is expected to be complete after 15 days,” said Singh.
