Denied chance to take UPSC prelims, Kumta boy kills self
Varun Chandran committed suicide on Sunday evening by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his rented room in Rajendra Nagar area of central Delhi, a senior police officer said.

NEW DELHI AND KARWAR:A 28-year-old UPSC aspirant from Karnataka committed suicide at his PG accommodation in Rajendra Nagar of New Delhi, after he was denied permission to attend prelims on Sunday.
The deceased Varun Chandra was a resident of Kumta and son of Subhash Chandra, who is a researcher with Indian Institute of Science. Varun was denied entry into the UPSC exam hall for coming four minutes late and he was found dead at his PG accommodation in the evening.
Varun, who was preparing for UPSC prelims in New Delhi, is said to have reached the wrong venue Sarvoday Bal Vidyalay, Paharganj, on Sunday morning. Then, he rushed to the assigned centre — Sarvoday Bal Vidyalay, Kaseruwalan, Paharganj — for the exam. When he reached the assigned exam hall, he was four minutes late and denied entry into the hall. He had reached the first centre on time, at 8.45 am. On realising his mistake, he rushed to the right centre and reached there at 9.24 am, but was he denied entry. His suicide note read: “It is very sad on the part of the supervising officials that such a thing happened. I understand that rules are rules but bending them for a good purpose should be legitimate”.
Varun, however, wrote: “NOBODY/NOTHING has compelled me to take this step... Although it is a decision taken in haste. It would anyway have happened anytime in future”.
His relatives have left to New Delhi to receive Varun’s body. “He was a bright student and he did his schooling and PU in Kumta. He went to Dharwad for higher studies and completed BCA and did masters in communication. For the last two years he was in Delhi preparing for UPSC and attending coaching classes,” a relative said.
Varun’s father Subhash Chandra and his mother in Kumta are in shock over the death of their only son. They refused to speak to the media. Pallivi, elder daughter of Subhash, who is in Mumbai rushed to New Delhi. Varun’s body will reach Goa on Tuesday morning and funeral is expected to be held on the same day.
