Coimbatore: An apartment owner was shocked to find a bag filled with demonetized Rs 1000 notes with a face value of Rs 60 lakh on Tuesday morning.
On Monday evening at 8.30 pm, a gang of five people approached Venkatesh, the owner of a service apartment in Peelamedu Jain apartments for a room. Venkatesh took them to the apartment and showed them around. They liked it and paid an advance. Two of them stayed down stairs while two went up. Suddenly a motorcycle reached that place and all left the place hurriedly. “They told him that they will come back after having dinner,” one of the investigating officers said.
Venkatesh found that they had left a bag in the apartment and so called them. The person who had given him an identity card in the name of Tas Tahir told him that they will return in sometime.
The next morning, when he called them, the phone wasn’t reachable. Suspecting their activity, Venkatesh went and checked the room. He checked the bag and was shocked to find 60 bundles of demonetized Rs1000 value notes. He immediately informed the Peelamedu police station and handed over the bag to the police. As per the police the address on the ID proof is Namakkal.
The police officials seized the notes and formed two special teams. “The vehicle number provided by the complainant is fake. The address and name on the ID proof is also fake. We have checked CCTV camera footage and are on the lookout for them. We will nab them soon,” a police officer said. He added that a case was registered in Peelamedu police station.
We are tracking the phone number and the motorcycle that reached the spot there. “It could be a case where they planned to exchange the old notes for money and the transaction had gone wrong due to some reason. Since they all hurriedly left after the bike reached the spot, we just need to catch hold of the person on the bike,” an investigating officer said.
